A Tribute to Lady

Lady was my loving companion for 13 years. We came together on Kauai when she was about 3 years old. Over the past few months she was becoming overwhelmingly uncomfortable with her physical body.....and not exhibiting even an ounce of joy. I had been trying to help her via an array of integrative techniques, but she was not improving and recently, she had begun to pace in delirium in the night.

She now was physically deaf and sort of in a continual daze but I asked her out loud, "Look at me in the eyes if you want me to help you out now girl." She swung her head around at that moment and held a fixed gaze with me. A few hours later I asked, "Lady look at me if you want to travel on now?" Again, she immediately turned her head towards me and looked me in the eyes. Well, I asked her 2 more times during the next day, she responded in the very same way with a beautiful placid but firm loving gaze.

My friend, Biena, was visiting from Kauai and we had been unable to sleep for a couple nights due to Lady's periodic restless pacing. I wanted Biena to get a good night's sleep and since I lived in a one-room cabin, the only way to arrange this this was for me to sleep that night in the back of my van with Lady..... This was good for I truly felt like being alone and in communion with her. I put her bed next to my mattress and quilt and we went to sleep around 10. An hour later she woke up and started stepping all over me. I gently put her on her bed on her side facing me, and I lay on my side facing her. I gently massaged every inch of her and sang to her softly. Soon she began to snore. I continued caressing every inch of that dear beautiful body, knowing in my heart that this would be the last night I would be blessed by her physical presence.

The whole night I kept my hand between her front legs pressed against the little white crest on her chest feeling her heartbeat, crying softly and humming to her. I watched Pleides, Taurus and Sirius do their nightly passage framed by the window of the van. When the sun arose we went in the cabin, and at 8:00 I phoned Murt, the vet, and asked if he could help her to the Rainbow Bridge at noon.

Biena drove the hour and a half trip to Santa Fe, so I could stay in the back with Lady. We arrived at the office and Murt came out to the van. He gave her the first shot which eased her gently to sleep. He came back and gave her the final injection. As he did so I nuzzled my face into her beautiful chest............felt her last heart beat......and then went to her face and breathed her last expiration. At that moment I heard myself quietly say "wonderful," for I felt a total relief and happiness that she was free. This was not formed by the intellect, but arose from a strong sublime feeling that came over me.

About two hours later I phoned a friend, Dani, who lives in the home that I lived in for eight years in the countryside of north shore Kauai . I wanted to tell her, for she was a friend of Lady's and on that land Lady was in her prime- a lithe, exuberant jungle adventuress- this was the land that she adored! I told Danne about Lady's passing, and ended by saying, "Ya know, I bet she's back there already." Then, Dani, who is not at all a "space cadet" said, "Susan, that gives me chicken skin!.... About an hour ago I was looking off the lanai onto the lawn where my car was parked. Yesterday morning I had propped bag of chicken feed against the tire. I was kinda' staring at it and all of a sudden it just tipped over..... and morphed into a golden lab. Now this sorta' thing doesn't happen to me and I was kinda' freaked out...... but now I know who it was!

The next day Danne phoned to tell me that in the morning she saw four paw prints in her chain-link fenced-in vegetable garden!...only four...just inside the fence.

Lady dear, I'm glad your flying free and thank you for letting me know..... I'm sure you're chasing chickens through the clouds!
